The Kaikoura Marine Centre and Aquarium is a developing project focused on education, awareness, research and conservation of the local marine life in the Kaikoura region. We aim to be an affordable, interactive, hands-on research and educational centre for all to enjoy.
We are located on the New Wharf in Kaikoura. There is so much to see! We have a Glow in the dark Canyon Room to show the different types of animals that live in the deep dark ocean. We have lots of live specimens of local species in our Tank Room. There are carpet sharks, seahorses, octopus, crayfish, sea urchins, sea stars, purple crayfish and two Touch tanks, and lots of different kinds of fish to look at! We have expanded into three newly opened rooms, and we now are exhibiting our vast seashell collection, a television with whale and dolphin information and a Giant Squid room. We also have a local research section and a marine mammal sightings board updated daily.
We strive to be the centre for marine education in Kaikoura, and ultimately in New Zealand. We hope to bring a sense of cohesiveness between all of the recreational and commercial marine activities around Kaikoura, and involve the community in protecting their environment by first learning more about it.
A family pass is $20 (4 persons) - $2 per extra child and $5 per extra adult.
Seniors (65+) and students are $6 each.
We do have a frequent visitors card where every 3rd visit is FREE.
We hope to see you soon at the Kaikoura Marine Centre and Aquarium!
