The Kaikoura Marine Centre and Aquarium will be as involved as possible in local conservation projects, both terrestrial and marine based. We will conduct our own conservation proejcts as well as partaking in other community groups.
A few ideas that we have are:
Beach Cleanups
We would like to organize several beach cleanups a year, possibly even monthly cleanups. We would like as many of the local schools to be involved as well as local businesses and families.
Little Blue Penguin Conservation
The KMCA would like to help with the conservation of our local population of little blue penguins. This would include helping with the construction of nesting boxes and monitoring the progress of the local penguins.
Native Wildlife Rehabilitation
One day the KMCA would like to provide a facility for injured native wildlife to be rehabiliated by world class wildlife veterinarians. We would accept having native wildlife from not only the Kaikoura region, but other areas of New Zealand if other facilities weren't readily available (for example kiwi and kakapo breeding programs).
